Balinese Painting
Bali is not only known as the “island of the gods” but also as the “island of the artists”. An artsy spirit exists on the island and seems to never go out with nature, religion and blood of artist families and is passed from generation to generation. Traditionally Balinese artists only produced religious art for depicting myths. Several works of art that you can find in some places at the ruins of Gelgel Kingdom (also known as Klungkung, south-east Bali) are part of the oldest traditional Balinese paintings. It is estimated painted around the 15th century. The simple painting style with natural dye made of rice starch and the cotton flower looks like the paintings that you can find in “wayang kulit” (shadow puppetry from Java).
One of the oldest painting that you can enjoy as a tourist today is the lotus painting and figure of the god Ganesha. They are well preserved in Pura Besakih. The relics are estimated to have been painted in the 15th century. Some works from the early 19th centuries are now placed in some museums in Ubud, in the Ubud palace and in temples as decorative elements.
At the beginning of the 1930s Ubud, Batuan and Sanur became more recognized by tourists as regions with exceptional quality work of art. Some famous Balinese painters at that time were I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Ida Bagus Gelgel and Ida Bagus Kembang. They acculturated traditional concepts and materials in their artworks. Also, they were influenced by the west. During the 50s, 60s and 70s Balinese arts communities and associations were formed in several areas. The art school started to educate Balinese artists with more abilities. International artists began moving to Bali in the early 1900s. Along with them new approaches spread to the locals. Ubud and the neighbouring Batuan village have since become famous for their painters, who tackle traditional landscapes and subjects in colourful and detailed paintings.
Newer schools of artists experimented with more modern forms of art, nowadays. You can see a big range of artistic approaches in the art galleries across Bali. But also in hotels, cafes, and restaurants which sometimes have exhibits showing. Artists of all kinds and skill levels sell their paintings to tourists, for reasonable prices. The prices depend on the artist and their talents.
